Also, just a random thought that occurred to me, today, during the funeral.

Not being religious makes it a lot harder to deal with loss.  I can completely understand why people are drawn towards religion.  It’s a comfort.  It’s much, much easier to tell yourself, “She’s in a better place.  She’s smiling down on us right now.  She is with God, now.  She is at peace.” than to sit in the same pew at the same church at the same funeral service and tell yourself, “Well.  Fuck.  I really don’t know what happens after you die, so I really don’t know what to think right now.  Well, this sucks.”  

It’s a coping mechanism, if anything, religion is.  Which is fine by me.  I don’t know what I believe, but if believing in something, whatever it is, can help someone, somewhere get through something that might otherwise drive them insane or tear them apart, then right on for them.  It’s sort of a shame that not everyone can have that automatic sort of consolation, I think.
